Barber, Student Ball State University ______________________________________ Introduction For first-year students, the college experience can be a very stressful period. As they transition into a new and exciting living-learning community, first-year students are faced with a number of developmental challenges - some pleasant and some painful. Included among these challenges are expectations that they will “become aware of their emotions, learn how to control them, and integrate them into ongoing decisions and behaviors” that will ensure their success in all aspects of campus life (Upcraft & Gardner, 1990, p. 42). This is especially true for students in college and university residence halls who must quickly learn to “recognize and respect differences, to understand the roots and meaning of those differences, and most importantly, to work cooperatively with persons fundamentally different from themselves” (Cornwell & Guarasci, 1993, p. 41). Unfortunately, many residential students enter college lacking the developmental skills that will enable them to maintain balance, control, and an appropriate means of expressing, integrating, or managing their emotions (Chickering & Reisser, 1993). As a result, feelings of developmental incompetence often triggers a cycle of toxic emotions, including anxiety, anger, fear, and depression. While some of these feelings are normal, and can drive individuals to achieve beyond expectations, research suggest that when toxic emotions become excessive or overwhelming they can "interfere with daily life, academic success.and eventually derail the educational process" (Chickering & Reisser, 1993, p. 90). 2 To assist first-year students in dealing with negative feelings and other developmental issues, colleges and universities offer various ...
