Content Inside: 2007 Annual Sue C. Boynton Poetry Contest and Poetry Walk The Bellingham Arts Commission Poetry Committee announces the second annual Sue C. Boynton Poetry Contest. The 2007 theme is “Honoring Diversity.” Whatcom County residents of all ages are eligible to submit one poem each. For a poem to be eligible, all poets must follow the submission guidelines, which are available on the Allied Arts of Whatcom County website at www.alliedarts.com and Poetry Night’s website at poetrynight.org. The judges for this year’s contest will be announced soon. Fifteen poems, selected by two respected Washington State poets, will be engraved on plaques and mounted along a Sue C. Boynton Poetry Walk. The public can view the winning poems each year before they are replaced with the next year’s poetry contest winners. The 2006 winners are currently displayed in Fairhaven. Maps for locating the poems can be found in the poetry section at Village Books. In addition to the poems selected for the poetry walk, Poems of Merit will be printed and mounted in Whatcom Transit Authority buses. There will be up to thirty Merit Awards granted this year. Award certificates will be presented at a special ceremony at 7 p.m. on Friday, 15 June in the Whatcom Museum of History and Art Rotunda Room. The formal opening of the Sue C. Boynton Poetry Walk will be announced this spring. The Sue C. Boynton Poetry Contest and Walk is named for an early resident of Whatcom County who helped organize Bellingham’s PTA’s and St. Luke’s Hospital Assistance League. She taught classes at the YWCA and, in 1917, climbed Mt. Baker. Boynton was in demand as a community speaker, and often shared her poetry with audiences. Her last public reading was in July 1976 at age 95 when she read a message from President Ford along with one of her poems for the Bicentennial Program in the old City Hall.
