Content Inside: 4.3 - THE MUSIC THERAPY OPTION This curriculum leads to a baccalaureate degree in music therapy approved by the American Music Therapy Association. The curricular structure includes studies in music therapy, music, psychology, sociology/anthropology, general studies, and electives. A six-month period of clinical training is required in addition to the on-campus course work. This clinical training internship follows all academic work and precedes the granting of the degree. After completing the six-month clinical training, Music Therapy graduates are eligible to take the Certification Board of Music Therapy examination. Upon passing the exam, qualified applicants will receive the MT-BC (Music Therapist-Board Certified) credential. Students may obtain dual certification in Music Education and Music Therapy by completing degree requirements in both programs. Objectives for the Music Therapy Option 1. To enable students to assess and identify treatment needs of various client populations. 2. To enable students to formulate therapeutic treatment goals for group and individual sessions. 3. To enable students to select diverse musical materials consistent with the therapeutic treatment plan. 4. To enable students to motivate various client populations to participate in musical experiences. 5. To enable students to recognize significant changes in the client’s response to music stimuli. 6. To enable students to evaluate the effectiveness of various music therapy methods. 7. To develop in students the ability to empathize and relate to various client populations. 8. To develop in students the ability to work cooperatively with other members of the therapeutic treatment team.
