Women can be especially at risk of increasing their suffering. Those who suffer back pain are advised not to choose high heels and there are two main reasons. First high-heeled shoes throw the entire weight of the wearer forward making it far more difficult to keep an upright balance. Extra muscular effort is needed to stay upright much of which is concentrated in the lower back producing an exaggerated arch which can easily lead to back pain. Secondly wearing high heels can make it very difficult for the feet to carry out their important sensing and balancing roles. If women in high heels look like they are about to fall over well its probably because they are contact with the surface we are walking on is decreased making the wearer much more susceptible to stumbling and falling which can in turn jar the back. Back pain is not the only consequence of shifting the natural balance of our stance transfering the weight forward can also cause shallow breathing tight necks and shoulders and knee and ankle pain. So would it be safer to always wear the flattest shoes available to womankind? well apparently not. The fashionable flat pumps can be just as bad if not worse. Flat shoes provide absolutely no support for your feet. As they are so close to the ground with no cushioning wearing them is considered more dangerous than going barefoot.
