Content Inside: 1 ACTING AND IMPROVISATION TEACHERS GUIDE NEW WORLD is dedicated to making theater accessible to all people, through performances, workshops and lecture-demonstrations. This Introduction to our Creative Dramatics Workshop (also called Acting & Improvisation) should give you an idea of what to expect when we visit your school or classroom. Our work is based on three major ideas: trust, cooperation and support. These three words follow us into our everyday lives and give us a basis for working together and with other people. They are important for performers to understand. Take time to talk about these words, thinking about how, why and in what situations using them could help. Theater comes in many shapes and forms. Our theater is developed through improvisation, using the following games and variations of them to create physical images that relay a message. Most of the exercises have few or no words at all, putting the focus on movement. To trust, cooperation and support, we add concentration and relaxation. Concentration is a hard thing to hold on to. Talk about it; try to discourage giggling and talking, especially someone instructing or directing others in an exercise. Instill an attitude of agreeing with the situation and following what has begun rather than manipulating the scene to what one person desires. The absence of words helps a lot with this. It is best to work in a circle whenever possible. This gives everyone a chance to see whats going on and gives the group a center. This center helps to aid relaxation. The simple action of everyone standing and holding hands (sometimes its not so simple) for just a moment and looking at each other is all it takes to center the group. Let it be a ritual for bringing your students to order if they get rowdy or out of hand, or to begin each exercise.
