Content Inside: Algorithmic Artss BioEditor Algorithmic Arts BioEditor Display Screen Shot of BioEditor The BioEditor allows you to create Bio Sequence Table (.bst) files for BioMuse and SoftStep, from standard DNA and Protein data sequences that are freely available on the Internet. Two excellent free sources of genetic sequences are the Swiss Protein Data Bank and the NIH GenBank . The job of the BioEditor is actually quite simple. It separates the biological sequence data from the source text file, and it converts the data into a numerical format that can be used by BioMuse and SoftStep. Although there are a number of controls in the BioEditor, most of them are for delimiting secondary structure features such as turns, alpha helixes, and beta sheets which can be used to trigger musical changes or events. For a simple, direct translation of the protein or DNA data, you need only to read in the file and set markers for the beginning and end of the data. In order to save the binary Bio Sequence Table for use with BioMuse or SoftStep, you must register the software by purchasing a license key from Algorithmic Arts . If you do not have the license key the program will run normally, except that you can not save the binary sequence files. To register your license key, select the menu command Help/Install License. This will pop up the registration dialog. Enter your name and the license key to register. To remove your registration key from the computer leave both boxes blank and click on Install, then OK.
