The Nordic countries enjoy a special relationship with nature, and the landscape has always played a prominent part in cultural and artistic life. Around the mid 19th century, nature assumed particular importance as a symbol of emerging national identity. Nordic landscape painting, meanwhile, interacted      with wider European influences as it evolved. In the Open Air. Anders Zorn, Girls Bathing (In the Open Air) , 1890 Landscapes of the Mind. Christen Købke, A View from Dosseringen near the Sortedam Lake looking towards Nørrebro , 1838 The exhibition presents over 100 works produced by leading Nordic artists between 1840 and 1910. In the course of this 70-year period, the way the landscape was depicted changed radically. To reflect the different phases in the development of landscape painting, the exhibits are grouped thematically under five headings: Nordic Sublime, Close to Nature, In the Open Air, Evocative Landscape and Landscapes of the Mind. Collaborative exhibition. A Mirror of Nature is a collaborative exhibition produced    by the four Nordic national galleries: National- museum, Stockholm; Konstmuseet Ateneum, Helsinki; Nasjonalmuseet for Kunst, arkitektur og design, Oslo; and Statens Museum for Kunst, Copenhagen.       It will be on show at these galleries and at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts in Minnesota, a state that became home to many Swedish settlers.
