Content Inside: New Pottery Studio C arolyn Filter has recently opened a pottery studio in the Yellow Mill, Parkside level. After obtaining a B.F.A. from U of T and a Visual Arts Diploma from Sheridan College, Carolyn spent twenty years as a graphic artist. Then she discovered clay, and went back to Sheridan for three more years in the ceramics program. Why the change in medium? Carolyn thinks it may have something to do with childhood memories of making clay bunnies in the garden. Then there was the old mill house back in England. “I used to love wading in the river, and poking about for shards of discarded pottery”, says Carolyn. “I’d put the broken pieces together, imagin- ing what it once was - a teapot or a bowl”. Most of these shards must have been used in that old house, which dated from the 1750’s. It’s not surprising then, that Carolyn’s pottery is influenced today by 18 th cen- tury European tableware. Carolyn enjoys making ware for everyday use, to bring pleasure to the rituals of food and drink. The tureen form is currently very much a challenge. Using cone 6 porcelain, glazes, underglazes, lustres and decals, Carolyn’s one-of-a-kind pieces will emerge as she establishes her pottery, and fills her shelves with functional ware.
