Content Inside: Beginning Wood Carving By: Lady Thorkatla Manadottir Viking Period examples of carvings and tools available: The Viking period has left wonderful evidence of wood carved functional items as well as the tools to produce such work. The Mästermyr tool box, found in 1936 in a farmer’s field on an island off of the coast of Sweden has been dated to the Viking age. The Tools resemble those that are still in use today from chisels to rasps, and axes and adzes that were used to fell trees. Woodsaws, augers, draw knives and gouges were also in the box in good enough condition to identify them for their modern day equivalent uses. My interests in this period is due to the extreme detailing they put on functional items like beds, door frames, tent poles, horse harnesses, and sleds. They even carved hair combs and earwax spoons. Long, cold winters indoors probably allowed much time for individuals to create the intricate carvings found in burial sites. What would be more natural than picking up a piece of firewood and carving it while sitting close to the fire pit in a long house? The different styles clearly found in the Viking era can be broken down to six periods: Oseberg (800-875 AD) / Broa (750-825 AD) Borre (875-950 AD) Jelling (880-1000 AD) Mammen (950-1060 AD) Ringerike (980-1075 AD) Urnes (1050-1150 AD) Urnes-Romanesque (1100 - 1175 AD) Types of carving: • Shallow relief (carved as shallow as 1/8 inch in surface) • Bas relief (deep carved relief showing 2/3 or more of the figure free standing from the background • 3-D sculpture (carved in the round) • Incised carving (shallow knife point design carved into surface • Open work (incorporates relief and negative space through the wood) Types of wood easily available and good for beginners: limewood (basswood) Oak Poplar White pine (grows in the north without much grain) Beginning tool set: I recommend getting good tools in the beginning to avoid frustration during the learning process.
