The artist also worked with students at the school to make clay pieces that could feature in the work. Students and their families spent a two day workshop at the artist’s studio creating the final artwork, designed to be both a beacon visible from the main road, and a detailed work that offered much more to the viewer on closer inspection. The long, slow work of cutting the many tiles needed was done by the artist in preparation, and “students loved getting their hands dirty and seeing the immediacy of the work as it quickly came together”, Anthea commented. Students were responsible for the final presentation of the work to the public, taking part in the opening ceremony to local VIPs and invited guests, and also taking part in an ABC radio talk back show. Good documentation of the project resulted in a photo album now displayed at the school with pride, commemorating the project from start to finish. “The community that live around the park feel like they own the artwork because they were part of the process of making it”, described Anthea. In addition to staffing and resourcing provided by the school, Big Swamp received funding support from Department of Indigenous Affairs and Bunbury City Council. Working with the kids was unreal. They had the whole start to finish experience. This included putting the finished work up in the park, so the kids met people and saw what it was like to bring the community together.
