Content Inside: CAS AH 320 Modern British Art and Design (Formerly British Arts in the Twentieth-Century London) Core Class for the Arts and Art Administration Internship Track Class Tutor: Caroline Donnellan Meeting: Pinter Room, 43 Harrington Gardens Field Trips: Various London locations Contact Hours: 36 + 2 hour exam Course Overview: The course is designed as an introduction to the arts in Britain. The course is designed both to widen existing specialist knowledge and to provide non specialists with an overview. The history of the visual arts in twentieth Britain will be related to the politics of visual culture in general. Topics to be discussed will include History of Art & Design; Modern Art & Design; The Art Institution - Art for the Nation; The Bloomsbury Group & Others; The London Art Market; War Art - Representing the Unrepresentable; Sculpture in the City; YBA’s and not so YBA’s & Graphic Art - Graffiti Art. Teaching Pattern: Teaching Sessions will be divided between classroom lectures and field trips. Students should bring travel cards and be dressed for all weather walking. Attendance at all classes and visits is mandatory. Students missing any session without a doctor’s letter or authorisation from the Director will automatically be docked a grade. Persistent lateness will be penalised. Assessment Method: Grades for the course will be made up by the following criteria: 50% for the Research Paper which is to be handed into the Academic Office. * Please do not print off your essay on the due date, as there maybe printer problems and late submission of the research paper will result in the automatic docking of a grade. Essay Question: The essay should be 2,000 words in length with captioned illustrations. The written paper should indicate thorough research and critical use of bibliographic sources; the internet is not an acceptable source. 50% for the Exam: The two hour exam paper takes the form of two questions which will be handed ...
