Dance activities: folk dance
Objectives
To plan for and use advanced techniques in their dance/nTo make use of
choreographic principles when composing a complete dance and to adapt the
composition to meet the needs of individuals
Activity description
The group is working towards the completion of core task 1 in the advanced dance
unit of the QCA schemes of work. In previous lessons they have made the selection
of the dances they will perform as part of a show. They have explored the use of
costume and lighting to improve the spectacle of their performance. In this lesson
they are working to ensure that the dance is perfected, making refinements as
necessary. In the next lesson they will put on their performance for other pupils.
Because the group dance in a folk dancing club in the community, they are able to
work with material not usually accessed by pupils in key stage 3.
Commentary
The group is very well rehearsed and technically very proficient. They consistently
make use of advanced skills and techniques, showing high standards of precision,
control and fluency. They draw on what they know of the principles of composition,
applying them with proficiency and flair. The quality of their performance skills and
the fluency and accuracy of their work, as well as their effective use of costume
enables their performance to show characteristics of level 8.
