Panel Discussion On Friday, Nov. 3, at 7 p.m. in the Rasmuson Theater, a panel discussion on “Indigenous Archaeology: Respecting Objects, History and Place,” will explore how indigenous archaeology has established new ways of understanding the links between past and present. Panelists will discuss Native American tribes’ reclamation of objects, culture and community history and will examine case examples, such as the impact of the destruction of the Spiro mounds’ on the Caddo peoples in Oklahoma. W. Richard West Jr. (Southern Cheyenne), founding director of the National Museum of the American Indian, will introduce the panelists, and Joseph Watkins (Choctaw), associate professor of anthropology at the University of New Mexico, will moderate the discussion. Panelists include Jereldine RedCorn (Caddo/Potawatomi), traditional Caddo potter and educator; Janine Bowechop (Makah), director of the Makah Cultural and Research Center and vice chairperson of the National Association of Tribal Historic Preservation Officers; Stephen Loring, Arctic archaeologist at the Smithsonian’s Arctic Studies Center; Dorothy Lippert (Choctaw), supervisory archaeologist at the National Museum of Natural History; and John Beaver (Muscogee), repatriation program specialist at the National Museum of the American Indian.
