Content Inside: Digital Photography Tips By Richard Berry Many climbers, hikers and skiers have now replaced their film cameras with digital cameras and enjoy the flexibility that the digital cameras offer. There are some disadvantages of using digital technology over film, in this article I would like to offer some solutions to the common problems. Limited battery life, especially in winter, can mean that our cameras are quickly delegated to the bottom of our packs. An obvious solution is to carry a spare battery but on a long and cold winters day, even the spare can run out of power. Keep the battery close to your body to keep it warm. If you swap batteries during the day then warm up the expired battery, you may be surprised as to how much power will be restored. On a long day, I use handwarmers to keep my fingers and my batteries warm. If your camera uses proprietary batteries then buy a generic spare, these can be significantly cheaper than the manufacturers battery and I have not noticed any difference in performance. If battery life is still a concern then turn the LCD display off and use the viewfinder to compose your photographs. Another problem with digital photography is that of reduced exposure latitude or dynamic range. This simply means that the digital camera cannot cope with a scene that has dark areas and bright areas at the same time. The exposure latitude of a typical digital camera is similar to that of slide film such as Fuji Velvia. As mountaineers we will typically see photographs that have correctly exposed foregrounds but skies and snow covered mountains will be overexposed. To overcome this problem we have to make the shadows brighter or the highlights darker. Making the shadows brighter is the easiest solution. Turn your flash on.
