Content Inside: January, 2007 EDUCATION NEWS Do you have a personal story of love and forgiveness? Consider sharing it with your community through WXXI’s Storytelling for Healing project. WXXI’s Power of Forgiveness Campaign is part of the national Campaign for Love and Forgiveness, funded in part by the John E. Fetzer Institute, The year-long outreach initiative is dedicated to illustrating how powerful the act of love and forgiveness can be. WXXI believes that telling our own stories of healing deepens understanding among families and neighbors, friends and enemies. This is a wonderful writing or communications assignment for youth in ELA, social studies and media courses. See examples at: wxxi.org/forgiveness. Submit written, audio or video stories, that can be added to our “storytelling for healing” collection. This collection is shared with the community throughout the year, on WXXI-TV, WXXI-FM and WXXI- AM, and WXXI.org. It is a “loving critique” of certain disturbing developments in rap music culture from the point of view of a fan who challenges the art form’s representation of masculinity. HIP HOP: Beyond Beats & Rhymes airs on WXXI-TV 21 (cable 11) Friday, February 23 at 10 p.m. WXXI is part of the National Community Engagement Campaign. Some goals of the campaign are to: • Engage young people in reflection, discussion, critical thinking and problem solving around the causes and effects of sexism, homophobia, and violence within hip-hop culture. • Support the work of local organizations that serve youth. • Generate a national conversation and provide opportunities to sustain conversations. • Emphasize the positive, creative contributions of hip- hop.
