Content Inside: Department of Theatre and Film Filmmaking and Screen Acting FILMMAKING AT THE UNIVERSITY OF WINNIPEG In 2001-02, the Department of Theatre and Film introduced a new area of study: Filmmaking. This means that it is possible to obtain a 3-year B.A. degree with a Major in Theatre that includes the following sequence of courses: 83.1010/6 Introduction to Film 83.1001/6 Introduction to Theatre: Performance 83.2310/6 Filmmaking I: Screen Narrative Technique 83.2410/6 History of Film 83.3310/6 Filmmaking II: Directing the Short Film And/Or 83.3311/6 Film Editing Students will also have to fulfil the other requirements for the 3-year degree as specified in the University of Winnipeg Calendar. The following are brief descriptions of the courses in the Filmmaking area of study. Note that since some of these are “experimental” courses, they are not yet listed in the Calendar. Complete descriptions are published in the current Timetable. 83.1010/6 INTRODUCTION TO FILM This course introduces the student to aspects of the art of film through lectures, screenings and some practical involvement in the filmmaking process. 83.1001/6 INTRODUCTION TO THEATRE: PERFORMANCE This course introduces students to the fundamental concepts of theatre and drama and takes them step-by-step through the basic processes of acting. 83.2310/6 FILMMAKING I: SCREEN NARRATIVE TECHNIQUE (formerly 83.3610/6 Screen Narrative Technique) This course is a practical introduction to storytelling on screen from the director’s perspective, including the basics of storyboarding, camera angles, setups, moves, and editing. These techniques are explored using the medium of video in both a field and studio environment. 83.2410/6 HISTORY OF FILM This course covers the development of the art of film and the film industry from its beginnings to the present. The emphasis is on the development of fimmaking techniques and the impact of changing technologies. 83.3310/6 FILMMAKING II: DIRECTING ...
