Content Inside: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Contact: Angie Spong Graffiti Removal Team The Center for Community and Neighborhoods 865-7548 aspong@ci.burlington.vt.us MAYOR KISS TO HOST PRESS CONFERENCE RECOGNIZING EFFORTS TO CREATE ANTI- GRAFFITI “COMMUNITY ART SPACE”; COLLABORATION OF CITY’S GRAFFITI REMOVAL TEAM, LOCAL YOUTH AND AREA YOUTH GROUPS Burlington, VT– May 16, 2007 – Burlington Mayor Bob Kiss will hold a press conference to recognize and unveil the combined efforts of the City’s Graffiti Removal Team, Burlington youth organizations, and local youth to create a “Community Art Space” to help combat graffiti. The press conference will take place on Thursday May 17 at 4:30 p.m. at the corner of North and North Union streets (with a rain date of Friday May 25). The City of Burlington’s Graffiti Removal Team (GRT), a program of the Center for Community and Neighborhoods (a division of the Community and Economic Development Office), is helping out young people who want to make Burlington a more beautiful place. The joint effort is called “Community Art Space,” and it was envisioned by a group of former graffiti-tagging youth who wanted to create public art legally. The three youth painted panels and installed them on a large green fence, with the owner’s blessings, on the corner of North and North Union Streets last December. Unfortunately, these panels were vandalized. The GRT then went back to the drawing board to locate funding for necessary improvements. The GRT was one of 75 organizations (only 18 of which were from the U.S.) selected from nearly 350 applicants to receive a $500 Disney Minnie Grant. The grants are funded by the Walt Disney Company and awarded by Youth Service America for projects coinciding with National Youth Service Day, the largest service event in the world highlighting contributions that young people make to their communities.
