Content Inside: Freedom-2, LLC Technology Backgrounder Founded in 1999, Freedom-2 LLC (F2) is a pioneer in the development of safe, quality inks for the purpose of permanent but removable tattoos. The F2 ink technology is the first and only patented ink designed specifically for safe and easy, future removal. The technology is the result of combined seminal discoveries by R. Rox Anderson, M.D., Wellman Laboratories of Photomedicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital; Craig A. Drill; Susanna Mlynarczck-Evans, Ph.D., and Bruce Klitzman, Ph.D. and Kim Edward Koger, M.D., F.A.C.S. of Duke University. F2’s ink is a microencapsulation of biodegradable and bioabsorbable dyes or other chromophores (color pigments) within safe, colorless polymer microspheres ‘beads.’ Like currently used tattoo inks, these particles will become entrapped in the dermis of the skin to form tattoos. Unlike current inks, F2’s microencapsulated inks can be removed or altered by a single-pass laser treatment. Tattoo and Tattoo Removal Safety Issues Today, the Academy of Dermatologic Surgery currently recognizes three methods of tattoo removal: dermabrasion, surgical excision and laser surgery. Tattoo removal using laser surgery is more precise and less damaging to the skin and the most effective. Even so, attempts at removing tattoos using laser therapies or topical treatments can exacerbate the harmful attributes of the tattooed inks or dyes and cause irreparable damage to the skin. There are three types of Q-switched lasers used for tattoo removal: the Alexandrite laser, the ND YAG laser, and the Q-switched Ruby laser. Since different types of lasers are more effective at removing certain colors and/or working with different skin shades, effective tattoo removal may require several treatments as well as the use of several different lasers.
