Content Inside: The Division The Music Education and Music Therapy Division offers advanced study leading to the following degrees and programs: • Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Major in music education with emphases in music education, music therapy, and related areas • Master of Music Education (M.M.E.) Major in music education, including a master’s degree track in choral pedagogy in cooperation with the KU Division of Choral Music Major in music therapy • Music therapy graduate equivalency program KU’s first music education Ph.D. was granted in 1951. From that time through May 2005, 119 music education doctor- ates have been earned at KU. About two-thirds of these degrees emphasized music education; the other third focused on music therapy. More than 450 mas- ter’s degrees have been completed. Di- vision graduates have achieved posi- tions of leadership as deans, directors of schools, chairpersons, directors of music therapy, and faculty members in the Big 10, Big 12, and Southeastern conferences, as well as many other major universities and colleges in the U.S. and abroad. Others hold leader- ship positions in public schools and clinical settings throughout the world. The music therapy graduate equiv- alency program leads to initial entry into the profession for those with un- dergraduate degrees in closely related fields. For students with undergradu- ate music education degrees, the music therapy equivalency typically requires two academic years on campus plus six months of full-time internship. Depend- ing on the individual’s particular un- dergraduate course work, the equiva- lency will require collateral undergrad- uate study as well as graduate course work. Completion of the equivalency program qualifies the individual to take the national certification examina- tion offered by the Certification Board for Music Therapists.
