Content Inside: PLANET HIP-HOP A brief anthology in search of Urban Pride and Identity UN-HABITAT Directed by: Nicholas You Researched and written by: Roselyne Mburu Preface Like many of my contemporaries of the baby boom generation, my interest in Hip Hop was limited to intellectual curiosity. My tastes in art, music and fashion were, to say the least, very different. Two reasons compelled me, however, to take a closer look at this movement encompassing graffiti, break-dancing, music, dress codes and attitude, and to lend a more attentive ear to the lyrics of rap. The first was the holding of free and fair elections in Kenya in late 2002. Having lived in Kenya for over 20 years, I was concerned with as well as emotionally engaged in the outcome. A rap song hit the charts and remained at the top throughout the campaign period. Its message contributed in no small way to mobilising and galvanising a predominantly young electorate to shun the political patronage and the corrupt practices that characterised the first two attempts in democratic pluralism in the 1990s. The second is the exponential growth of Hip Hop and rap worldwide, something I have witnessed in my travails and travels throughout Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Arab world. Both these observations led me to seek what was, at first, a very nebulous link between Hip Hop and my work at UN-HABITAT - the UN Agency devoted to housing for the poor and sustainable urban development. I decided to research this so-called sub-culture and to scratch the surface of this global phenomenon.
