What is a landscape? ( answer below )
When President Thomas Jefferson made the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, people started
exploring the newly expanded country, particularly the wilderness. Artists drew and
painted landscapes to show the people back home what the country looked like. Artists
started coming to Maine to paint in the early 1800s.

Jonathan Fisher was minister of the Congregational Church in Blue Hill, Maine, for 41 years. He
was also an inventor, scientist, poet, architect, farmer and self-taught artist. Reverend Fisher was very
interested in showing exactly what Blue Hill looked like, so he put a lot of details in his paintings. He
wanted to show that his town was not wilderness anymore, but civilized.
• What do you see that you might call signs of civilization?
• If you were one of the people in this painting, how long would it take you to walk
into town? Where would you go?
