Mothers such as newsreader Jackie Bird and Scots fashion boss Michelle Mone spoke movingly of their experiences of having seriously-ill children treated in Yorkhill Hospital. Jackie’s son Jacob, now nine, was born eight weeks prematurely and, because his lungs were not properly developed, he spent three weeks in intensive care. The BBC presenter said: “We all hope we will never have to use the facilities at Yorkhill, and most of us will not. But some parents are not so fortunate.” Michelle Mone, founder of the Ultimo bra empire, believes Yorkhill staff saved the life of her son Declan after he suffered a horrific nosebleed. He lost so much blood doctors were on the verge of giving him a transfusion. Carol Smillie, of TV’s Changing Rooms, has been a big supporter of the campaign since the beginning, for the simple reason that as the mother of three healthy children she knows she is one of the lucky ones. “It is the luck of the draw,” she said. “I look at my own kids and have this incredible feeling of ‘thank God!’ But when you see what other parents have to go through, you realise the amazing work that goes on at Yorkhill.” Actors and actresses from Shieldinch to Hollywood joined together to show their support. The cast of BBC soap River City donned Magic Million T-shirts to spread the message and Glasgow actor Billy Boyd, who appeared in the Lord of the Rings films, proved even the famous Hobbits were on our side.
