The detail photographs in this guide illustrate some the many materials used in creating mosaics and core design concepts used throughout the ages. We hope you find it a useful enhancement to your visit, whether you are an enthusiast of the medium or are encountering mosaic art for the first time. Glossary ANDAMENTO: (Italian andare; to walk or to ride). Describes the placement of tesserae in the flowing pattern suggesting movement and rhythm. See Julia Yiris, “Latitude” OPUS: (Latin for “work”). The series of labels developed to describe the styles and visual effects of the way mosaics are laid. OPUS SECTILE: (Latin sectilis; to cut, cut work). Describes a type of mosaic in which multi- colored stones are cut into shapes and the mosaic image relies on the careful joining of these shaped pieces of stone. See Brooks Tower, “Market Day II” OPUS TESSELATUM: (Latin for tessellates; set with small cubes). Generally refers to any mosaic using tesserae (usually cubes) though it can refer to a regular placing of tesserae in uniform horizontal or vertical lines. Glossary (continued). See Matteo Randi, “City Limits” OPUS VERMICULATUM: (Latin vermiculus; little worm). Describes a mosaic in which tesserae are placed in irregular lines. The technique is now most often used to add the suggestion of movement. See Deborah Wahl, “Mr. Bluesman” TESSERA/AE: Narrowly defined as a cube or square, these are the “building blocks” of mosaic design. A broader definition would include all individual components of any shape which, in company with others, form the complete mosaic.
