Content Inside: September 2004 marks the 25th anniversary of the SugarHill Gang’s release of “Rapper’s Delight”—a recording that arguably ushered in the era of rap and hip-hop music. To celebrate this phenomenal period in music history, Music Alive!, the educational music magazine for teenagers, kicks off the season with Hail to Hip-Hop!—a unique two-part series that brings this music, with all of its innovation and controversy, right into the General Music classroom. It’s the music kids love—with lessons, too. Hail to Hip-Hop! Part 1: Old School (October 2004 issue) presents the funk roots of rap in James Brown’s drum grooves, the emergence of dub music in the 1970s Bronx, early MCs DJ Kool Herc and Grandmaster Flash, and the crossover artists of the 1980s that expanded hip-hop’s audience. Hail to Hip-Hop! Part 2: The Mix and the Meaning (November 2004 issue) continues where Part 1 left off, covering rap’s influence on rock, the gangsta rap movement, the controversies of explicit lyrics and unauthorized sampling, notable female artists, and hip-hop’s return to roots. “Our student readers love hip-hop music, but few of them realize that this style of music has been around for a quarter-century,” explains Caroline Horn, the magazine’s editor in chief. “We’ve developed coverage that will help them understand what today’s hip-hop music evolved from, and how that change in the music relates to developments in history, technology, and culture.” Like all features in Music Alive!, the Hail to Hip-Hop! series is supported by lesson plans in the accompanying Teacher’s Guide and musical examples on the accompanying Classroom CD (for this story, music by the SugarHill Gang, De La Soul, Queen Latifah, and the Black Eyed Peas is provided). Due to the explicit nature of many hip-hop lyrics, all music has been carefully screened for classroom appropriateness. About Music Alive!
