Kerr, RTM, LSW, self-employed music therapist Music therapy is the systematic application of music to aid in the treatment of physiological and psychological aspects on an illness or disability. Ac- cording to the American Music Therapy Association’s website (www.musictherapy.org), the idea that music could serve a healing purpose has been around for centuries. But it was not until the late 1950s that the discipline of music therapy was formally developed and recognized in this country. This formalization was partly due to the strong, positive physical and emo- tional responses injured soldiers in veterans’ hospitals around the country showed after volunteer musicians played for them. Using music as a therapeutic tool can be particu- larly helpful to older adults. Studies have shown or suggested that music can have the following benefits: Physical • reduces muscle tension • reduces chronic pain • masks unpleasant sounds and feelings • facilitates physical participation in certain activities Psychological • helps recall past events • provides a nonverbal means of expressing a broad range of recognized and unconscious feelings • reinforces reality • reinforces identity and self-concept • decreases feelings of helplessness • alters mood by relieving anxiety and depression Listening to music for 20 minutes a day can have a big impact on your physical and emotional well-being.
