Kerr, RTM, LSW, self-employed music therapist Music therapy is the systematic application of music to aid in the treatment of physiological and psychological aspects on an illness or disability. Ac- cording to the American Music Therapy Association’s website (www.musictherapy.org), the idea that music could serve a healing purpose has been around for centuries. But it was not until the late 1950s that the discipline of music therapy was formally developed and recognized in this country. This formalization was partly due to the strong, positive physical and emo- tional responses injured soldiers in veterans’ hospitals around the country showed after volunteer musicians played for them. Using music as a therapeutic tool can be particu- larly helpful to older adults.
