Content Inside: Music Therapy is the skillful use of music as a therapeutic tool to restore, maintain, and improve mental, physical, and emotional health. The nonverbal, creative, and affective nature of music facilitates contact, learning, self-expression, communication and growth. The sessions meet the needs of children as young as 18 months old to the elderly with exceptionalities, conditions, or illnesses and to improve the quality of life for persons who are well. Sessions may take place in the VCM Music Therapy studios or in such facilities as hospitals, group homes, long- term care and independent living facilities, hospice, geriatric care facilities, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, and schools. Children, adolescents, adults and elderly with the following exceptionalities, conditions and illnesses may benefit from Music Therapy: Mental challenges Physical challenges Autism Spectrum Disorders Sensory impairments Learning difficulties Substance abuse Physical, sexual or emotional abuse Brain injuries Conduct and/or behavioural disorders Mental illnesses Strokes / Alzheimer’s / Dementia Palliative care. • • • • • • • • • • • • MUSIC THERAPY FACULTY Please see web site for full faculty bios Dr. Johanne Brodeur, Ph.D., MTA is Music Therapy Department Head and holds a Doctorate in Health Science and in Music/Music Therapy. She is a clinician specializing in Paediatrics with over 25 years of experience. Dr. Brodeur served as President of the Canadian Association for Music Therapy for 6 years, is an international Lecturer, a published author and is the recipient of the Norma Sharpe and the Franni Awards, the two most prestigious Canadian Music Therapy awards. Kirsten Davis, BMT, MTA, AVCM has 11 years of experience as a music therapist specializing in palliative care and long-term care settings.
