Content Inside: Music Therapy Major Department of Music College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences Published June 2007 Effective for students beginning degree Summer Sem. 2007 thru Spring Sem. 2008 Admission Requirements For Music Therapy Major 1. All students (i.e., new, freshmen, and transfer students) interested in ma- joring in Music Therapy will be given pre-music major status until they have completed the required audition/interview process, as verified by their area advi- sor through the Change of Major Form. 2. New freshmen must be admitted to USU in good standing in order to qual- ify for this major. 3. Transfer students from other institutions need a 2.75 total GPA and a 3.0 GPA in all music therapy courses in order to qualify for this major. 4. Students transferring from other USU majors need a 2.75 total GPA in or- der to qualify for this major. The Program The Department of Music at Utah State University offers a course of study leading to the Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Therapy. Students who successfully complete four years of coursework and a six-month internship (generally out-of-town) will have met all requirements to sit for the board certification exam administered by the Certification Board of Music Ther- apists in order to become a Board Certified Music Therapist. The primary goal of the program is to prepare men and women in skills using music to provide ther- apy for individuals with various disabilities. Music therapy, as defined by the American Music Therapy Association, is the scientific application of music, as directed by the music therapist in a thera- peutic environment, to influence changes in behavior. Such changes can enable individuals to achieve a more appropriate adjustment to society and to improve their functioning in a community setting.
