Content Inside: NATIONAL AND REGIONAL AWARD RECIPIENT North Eastern Ontario and Quebec Style in Motion: A Body Image Fashion Fair Fellowes High School (Pembroke ON) Program: Todays teenagers absorb the many cool images provided by fashion magazines and star-studded Hollywood. Unable to emulate airbrushed waif-thin models and styled pop stars teens often struggle with their appearance ultimately developing poor self-concepts. In an effort to dispel the myths about body image and support young people in achieving and managing a healthy lifestyle six Renfrew County schools jointly developed Style in Motion: A Body Image Fashion Fair. The innovative fashion fair took a high profile community fashion show and turned it into a healthy lifestyle presentation for teens. The county schools were motivated to design a nutrition education tool targeted at young people from the area encouraging them to adopt healthy lifestyles for life. The fashion show MC-commentary included brief healthy lifestyle tips and information throughout the show. Participating models were selected and showcased for their positive healthy life choices as active non-smoking individuals. The models exhibited healthy body types of all shapes and sizes refuting the perception that skinny means healthy. In addition to the informative show the fashion fair included display booths for attendees to browse and pick-up useful information and tips about healthy lifestyles. The Body Image Fashion Fair script along with logistical information on how the show was carried out from beginning to end was compiled into an easy-to-follow manual so that schools from across Canada could adapt the program.
