The fundamental assumption underlying this project is the need to move beyond the polarized gender-biased framework that understands women to be frivolous and artificial (i.e. attentive to fashion) and men as sensible and serious or natural (i.e. inattentive to fashion). Our primary objective is to identify the implications of a shifting male consumer culture for the textile and apparel industrial complex with a special focus on the degree of synchronicity between consumer and industrial perceptions. Our secondary objectives are: (a) to compare diverse American mens relationships with fashion as a function of gender identity and lifestyle; and (b) to analyze mens sensory (visual and tactile) responses to textiles and apparel.
