Content Inside: Oaxacan Papier Mache Animals Introduction Oaxaca, a state found at the southern point of Mexico is steeped in traditional values of family and religion. Farming and agriculture is the main source of income for most of the indigenious peoples whose ancestry and heritage derives from the Zapotec indians. In order to supplement their incomes the people in certain villages of Oaxaca have taken their crafts of black pottery, weavings and animal woodcarvings to mass market. Their creations while mostly produced for tourism have begun appearing in smaller museums and boutiques. The animal woodcarvings are created from the Copallio tree. Each piece is hand carved with a machete and small knives. The artist does not force the wood to create the animal, rather the wood creates the animal. Knots, bends, and twists in the found wood become unique characteristics of each animal. While many of the woodcarvings are derived from animals in which the artist may own as livestock or as a pet, other woodcarvings are highly imaginative and fanciful. Once carved, the woodcarving is painted with bright vivid colors using small dots and various patterns repeated over the surface to create bold designs. The Task Each student will complete a 3-Dimensional animal sculpture based on the wood carvings of Oaxaca, Mexico. The sculpture will consist of an armature of newspaper and masking tape covered in four layers of papier mache. When dry, the sculpture is painted in the style of the Oaxacan wood carvings. Bright colors, and repetition of patterns create the final look of the piece.
