Content Inside: Your skills Over the course of your degree you develop a good mix of subject specific and technical skills as well as transferable core skills. Consider these alongside other achievements, such as paid work, volunteering, family responsibilities, sport, membership of societies, leadership roles, etc. Think about how these can be used as evidence of your skills and personal attributes. Then you can start to market and sell who you really are, identify what you may be lacking and consider how to improve your profile. Dance and drama courses develop exactly those transferable skills which all types of employers are looking for: • communication skills; • teamwork, negotiation and persuasiveness; • time management and organisational skills; • analytical, critical and research skills. Performance develops creativity which is increasingly recognised as an important employability skill. Performance-related skills and understanding include: techniques and working methods; knowledge of the development and practice of the performing arts; significant historical and current issues. Seize every opportunity during your degree to develop those skills and knowledge, and get involved with any relevant student society. Look out for extra ways to extend your experience. Get relevant paid work (eg a ‘front of house’ job in a local theatre); voluntary work (eg teaching, or helping in an after–school club); broaden your experience (eg in a local community arts organisation); get a work placement (eg in a dance/drama company). You may create crucial contacts from any of these. Go to as many performances as you can to expand your ideas. The more you do, the more you’ll be adding to that all-important CV. Employment prospects Every year, statistics are collected to show what HE students do immediately after graduation.
