Content Inside: Equipment Insurance As part of your academic program, you are required to own, rent or borrow a fair amount of expensive equipment, such as cameras, lenses, lights, computers and peripherals. However, most schools do not provide insurance coverage against theft or damage that occurs outside the classroom. The risk of loss is squarely on you. Thats where the American Society of Media Photographers can help. In conjunction with the St. Paul Travelers insurance company, ASMP offers an insurance program specifically for photography students. It provides two coverage options for equipment: Option 1: Owned Equipment $10,000 Rented & Borrowed Equipment $25,000 Deductible $50 Annual Premium $225 Option 2: Owned Equipment $20,000 Rented & Borrowed Equipment $25,000 Deductible $50 Annual Premium $295 This insurance is valid world-wide, and it includes damage from fire, theft, breakage, water damage, wind, etc. It covers all kinds of photography equipment, including computer gear. But it is not general-purpose property insurance; it doesntcover your clothes, books, bikes or personal items. Liability Insurance ASMP also offers liability insurance, which is often arequirement for shooting on private or public property. The liability policy includes $1 million for general liability, $1 million for non-owned and hired automobile liability, and $5,000 camera coverage. The premium depends on geographic location and building construction type; standardminimum premium is $500 for a one-year policy. Qualifications In order to qualify, you must be an ASMP student member and you must be enrolled in an accredited photography school.
