In March the New York City public schools became the latest to join the crowd. About 500000 elementary and middle-school students in New York will be wearing uniforms next year. Students will be able to opt out of the dress code only if their parents request it in writing and then meet with school officials. Many educators say that uniforms help improve discipline attendance and grades. Officials also say that school uniforms cut down on violence because gangs often attack people wearing the colors of rival gangs. Uniforms come in standard colors that kids have to wear. However critics say that there are several problems with public-school uniforms. One problem they say is that uniforms discriminate against poorer students who do not have the money to buy expensive new clothes. Another problem is that uniforms undermine students' individuality.
