Steinholt 24 years and several revivals after punk rock hit British headlines in 1976, it has changed from provocation to cliché in the minds of most westerners. The few bands that fought on longest to prove the style alive have long since stiffened in their postures or jumped the bandwagon of commerce. Punk is dead. Or is it? In Russia things are usually different and punk is no exception. The Russian punk rock movement of today is more than an undead reminder of good times long gone. It fills an important function in contemporary Russian youth culture in distorting the gloomy picture of post Soviet everyday life. Experiences from a tough reality are provoked to give status in a small environment, where youth has stopped to let itself be disappointed by society and instead sets its own standards for the good life. The cocktail parties of New Russians, cannot beat breaking a tooth during far- out stage diving, the four-course supper of the prezident firmy can’t compete with dozing away a few hours in the mud outside Poligon and no Mercedes can replace a battered walkman with a tired Grazhdanskaya Oborona tape. March 18th 2000, Poligon, St. Petersburg The sole surviving band of the first Russian punk wave, Grazhdanskaya Oborona (“Civil Defence”), led by the legendary Egor Letov, played live for 500 euphoric fans. This concert could blow fuses in the mind of the most experienced and sober Western rock gig visitor. Police security was demanded on stage as the crowd went wild. Anybody getting too close to the singer would get his nose punched by a corpulent officer. But this was far from enough to stop the stage diving. It peaked when one lad threw himself off the PA and into the crowd – a fall of 4 meters. Whether landing permission was granted is unknown. During the punk hymns Razdrazhenie and Moya oborona, people got undressed and pressure in the mosh- pit reached a critical level. For our eye-witne ...
