Want to check out some of the coolest hip hop and spoken word artists around? Interested in participating in an upcoming hip hop contest open to all Baltimore youth ages 11 to 15? To do all this and more, come out to the I Buy Different Baltimore Kick-Off Celebration on Saturday, April 24 at The Baltimore Zoo. The festivities will include a free hip hop and spoken word concert; fun, youth-friendly activities; and a chance for young people to learn about I Buy Different Baltimore events. Performers include local musicians MC Ogūn, Droopy from 5thL, Team Fifty, and the St. Veronica’s Youth Steel Orchestra, a steel drum band made up of twenty local youth from ages 7 to 20. MC Ogūn, will host the concert and perform songs from his recent album, The Movement. Also, Droopy from the popular local group 5thL will perform spoken word and Ray Lugar of Team Fifty will perform the band’s top song “Believe.” Using the power of hip hop music to excite and educate youth, the I Buy Different campaign has come to Baltimore, Maryland to raise awareness and empower local young people about the importance of buying different – that is buying products that are environmentally and socially sound. American teenagers spend a remarkable $170 billion per year, making them a significant force in the consumer market. With this age group projected to be larger than the Baby Boomers, young consumers could have a tremendous positive effect on the planet by purchasing environmentally- friendly products.
