Content Inside: ROCK AND ROLL HOOCHIE KOO From Johnny Winter And (1970,Columbia) Words and Music by Rick Derringer Rick Derringer’s version of “Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo,”from his album All American Boy, is one of the most well-known classic rock songs of all time.But this earlier version,cut by JohnnyWinter And,is,to my mind,far superior.As a band,JohnnyWinter And had a distinctive,funky feel,fueled by the dual guitar prowess of Johnny and Rick.The Allman Brothers band is well-loved for the interplay between Duane Allman and Dickey Intro “Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo”features two distinct guitar parts throughout:Rick Derringer supplies the rock- solid rhythm work while JohnnyWinter adds complementary chord voicings and improvised single-note lines. The intro to this song is in fact the same as the chorus.Johnny’s part begins with unusual voicings on the top three strings for the F,Bb/F,G,and C/G chords,followed by a brief lead line based on the A blues scale (A–C–D–Eb–E–G).The majority of the improvisation in this song is based on this scale.Rick plays low-voiced power chords and major chords and displays a locked-in sense of time that has earned him respect as one of greatest rhythm guitarists ever.In measure four,Rick strums muted strings,accenting the first two sixteenth notes of beats 2 and 3. Across the last two measures of the intro,Johnny and Rick play harmonized syncopated licks that make reference to the V chord,E7.
