Content Inside: Russell Simmons Reports On Progress Of Hip-Hop Summit By Mark Allwood, BETi Music News Six months after hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons brought together artists, executives, politicians and civil rights leaders at the Hip-Hop Summit in New York City, the Island Def Jam chairman, along with Hip-Hop Summit Action Network President Min. Benjamin Muhammad, report that positive progress has been made on the initiatives drafted during the two-day conference. The Hip-Hop Summit Action Network is now a registered 501C3 and 501C4 non-profit corporation, with offices in New York, Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. "By all accounts, the hip-hop community is following through on the promises we made in June," Muhammad said in a statement. "We are taking back responsibility." The HHSAN had meetings with Timothy J. Muris, Chairman of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), and FTC Commissioner Orson Swindle to open a channel to policymakers in D.C. The fulfillment of the first Summit promise--to increase the visibility of Parental Advisory labeling from CDs to print and television advertising to street marketing and the Internet--is being carried out. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) says that voluntary Parental Advisory labeling is up 50 percent, and the FTC acknowledged "a promising start and a clear improvement" in Parental Advisory labeling in its recent report on Marketing Violent Entertainment to Children in the Motion Picture, Music Recording, and Electronic Games Industries. "The voluntary parental advisory labeling system is working," said Muhammad. "We are appropriately alerting parents and others concerning explicit content, and at the same time protecting the First Amendment." The content of music videos on Black Entertainment Television (BET) was also an issue at the summit, as many groups voiced their concern over the type of videos shown on the network.
