Map Layers
The Map Layers menu contains the list of layers that can be displayed in the map. Most
layers can be added to the map display independent of each other. The exception to this is
the Aerial Photos layers, of which only one type of imagery can be displayed at a time in the
map viewer. If a map layer is listed in light gray text, it is "grayed out" and not available at the
current map extent. Checked map layers are currently visible on the map as long as they are
not grayed out, while unchecked layers are not visible on the map at all.
Aerial Photos
2005 SEMCOG: 1 foot pixel resolution color photography from SEMCOG flown in 2005.
This photography covers all counties in Southeast Michigan.
2002 USGS: 1 meter color photography from the USGS flown in 2002. This photography
covers most of Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties.
Road Names: Major road names can be displayed at a scale less than 1:100,000.
Road Network: Major roads, those eligible for federal aid, can be viewed at any map extent.
Local roads are only displayed at a scale less than 1:24,000. While road segments can be set
to the active layer so they can be selected on the map, only major roads can be selected.
Map Tools
The Map Tools menu controls what action occurs when the mouse is used on the map
display. These tools are used to change the visible map extent and to interact with the map
by selecting features to view the data attributes of those features. If a tool is "grayed out", it is
not available in this particular map viewer. The following tools are available:
• Clear Selections
This map tool will clear or deselect any currently selected features in the map and empty
the data table of the attributes from previously selected features. It does not change what
the current mouse action for the map display is.
• Draw Box to Select
