Content Inside: Theatre etiquette is not nearly as old as theatre itself, but it remains a vital component of the unique experience of live performance. In the spirit of theatre education, AMTSJ presents you with actual theatre etiquette guidelines from manuals published in the mid-to-late 1800s and our 21 st century translations: It is ill-bred to arrive late at any public entertainment, and looks as if you were not sufficiently master of your own time to be punctual. Latecomers disturb the patrons around them and will be seated during a suitable moment at the usher’s discretion To talk during the performance is an act of rudeness and injustice. You thus proclaim your own ill-breeding and invade the rights of others, who have paid for the privilege of hearing the performers, and not for listening to you.
