Welcome to suburbia. Work hard & long and some day, maybe you, too, can live in a safe, happy suburb. But is that truly the definition of suburban? sub pref. 1. Of or belonging to a city or town; as, an urban population. 2. Belonging to, or suiting, those living in a city; cultivated; polite; urbane; as, urban manners. Some of the most innovative emerging artists from urban areas reaching as far as Australia, Brussels, and Brazil were invited to par- ticipate in the subURBAN Show based on their willingness to accept the following assignment: Take a piece of pre-existing “suburban” art i.e. the black ceramic panther next to the fire place, a Bob Ross fruit basket in grandma’s living room, or the velvet matador in an uncle’s basement Alter it in any way you choose to make it your own. Curator Victoria Semarjian & Michael and Marty from 1300 developed this exhibition to allow viewers to bear witness to the metamor- phosis of a piece of art that seems to inherently represent suburbia into an expression of urban voice. Or if compared with the defini- tion above, bringing a piece in an imperfect or partial state through to completion.
