Content Inside: Summerfest 2007: Celebrating Blue Ridge Traditions June 23–July 29 For six consecutive weekends this summer, residents of and visitors to North Carolina can experience history, music, and culture at Mountain Gateway Museum and Heritage Center’s Summerfest series, which features traditional music, craft demonstrations, storytelling, classes, and even a fly-fishing workshop. Mountain Gateway Museum is located in Old Fort, in McDowell County. Highlights: Gourd birdhouses by Susan Taylor; wood carving by Ray McCoy; storytelling by Freeman Owle and Orville Hicks; basketweaving by Ruby Lowery; music by the Queen Family, George Shuffler and Laura Boosinger, and David Holt and Friends. Events scheduled for Saturdays include craft demonstrations, workshops, and special amphitheater performances scheduled from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., while Sunday features “Music on the Porch” from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. For Visitors: Events include a variety of activities for all ages and are free and open to the public. Lawn chairs are welcomed and encouraged. All events are at Mountain Gateway Museum and Heritage Center, located at 102 Water Street in Old Fort. Classes and registration: Workshops must be registered for in advance by calling Mountain Gateway Museum and Heritage Center at 828-668-9259. Space is limited.
