Content Inside: O nce only associated with gang activity, military service and crim- inals, tattooing is now a main-stream form of self- expression. Research reveals that tattooing is the sixth fastest growing retail business in the Unit- ed States and that middle- class suburban women are the most important source of new cus- tomers. College-aged students are anoth- er enthusiastic body art consumer group. The results of many small- scale research projects reveal that approximately 1 out of every 5 col- lege students reports having at least one tattoo. What are the risks? When done under safe condi- tions, getting a tattoo usually does not cause serious or long-term health problems. However, tattooing — even under safe conditions — is not risk-free. Problems range from skin irritation and allergy to life-threaten- ing infections. Ink safety The pigments that color tattoo inks are subject to Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations as cos- metics and color additives. While safe for inclusion in lipstick and other cosmetics, the FDA has not approved these substances for injection into the skin. There is no scientific evi- dence supporting the safety of using these pigments to color tattoos. To date, the FDA has not attempted to regulate the manufacture and use of tattoo inks and leaves such matters to local authorities. Ink reactions Red inks that contain mercuric sulfide and ferric hydrate are a com- mon cause of allergic reactions. However, for some people even the red pigments isolated from plants can cause allergies. People who have this allergy, also called the red reaction, experi- ence swelling, inflammation and itching in the red pigmented areas. The red reaction may occur many years after getting the tattoo. Some clinicians believe that sunlight chemically changes tattoo dyes into allergy-causing substances. Injected inks can also stimulate the body to make scar-like tissue.
