Afrika Bambaataa says this about the intention of Hip-hop: “When we made Hip hop, we made it hoping it would be about peace, love, unity and having fun so that people could get away from the negativity that was plaguing our streets (gangs, violence, drug abuse, self hate, violence among those of African and Latino descent). Even though this negativity still happens here and there, as the culture progresses, we play a big role in conflict resolution and enforcing positivity.” This take on hip hop has somehow been lost in the mainstream media. Today hip hop’s rich diversity and modes of expression have been clouded by a plethora of misconceptions. The most common misconception of hip hop is that it is simply rap music. The two are often used interchangeably, however, rap music is just a part of what makes up hip hop culture. Hip-hop consists of several elements of which rapping and DJing are just a part.
