But for millennia, the most important stories were sung or chanted as poems. This class will introduce you to a wide range of poetic techniques and practices – and to a wide variety of approaches to reading, responding to and analyzing poetry – through an exploration of narrative poetry in English from Chaucer to the present day. Though we will read a great variety of poems, we will focus throughout on how dramatic monologues generate a sense of voice and situation. In a few short lines, dramatic monologues can create an astonishing empathy with and insight into characters. We will examine how masters of monologue from Chaucer to contemporaries such as Frank Bidart make marks on a page feel like harrowing intimacies, and fictional speakers seem like real people. GOALS: To develop a working knowledge of how to read, analyze, and compare poems; to develop a working vocabulary for articulating insights into and experiences of poems; to develop a feeling for metrical and non-metrical prosodies; to gain a sense of the scope and variety of poetry in English, and a taste for its major modes; and to understand basic techniques and challenges of poetic narration.
