Darius Spearman InterCultural Center Coordinator (707) 664-2710 A Tribute to Hip Hop at Sonoma State University Rohnert Park, CA – A night of music and dancing will mark the Tribute to Hip Hop at the Sonoma State University Cooperage on Friday, February 18 at 9pm. Admission is $5 for SSU Students, and $10 General Admission. Featured performer, Henri-Pierre Koubaka and Kasumai Bare (Peace in Abundance) perform ancient and contemporary Mandingo Music from Senegal, Mali, Guinea and Kongo. Henri-Pierre Koubaka leads the group with vocals and acoustic guitar. He is also the host of KALW Radio’s “Kumpo Beat,” which airs Thursday evenings from 10pm to midnight on 91.7 FM. While the unavoidable percussion section contributes secular and spiritual rhythms, the ensemble often incorporates a variety of instruments which may include balafon, violin or saxophone. Performance configuration can range from solo acoustic guitar to a large ensemble featuring dancers. Henri-Pierre Koubaka and Kasumai Bare have performed at: Cayuga Vault in Santa Cruz (2002), the Smash Hits Festival in Pleasant Hill (2002), Freight and Salvage Coffee House in Berkeley (2002), American Friends Society (fundraiser for Africa Network) in Oakland (2002), Ashkenaz in Berkeley(2001 and 2002), San Jose Jazz Festival, World Music Stage in San Jose (2001), Earth Island Institute Fundraiser at UC Berkeley (2001), IDEX 15th Anniversary Gala Event in San Francisco (2000), San Francisco Museum of Modern Art Family (1998 and 1999), and Yoshis Nite Spot - Jazz in Flight in Oakland (1999).
