Content Inside: April 30, 2003 Contact: Kenneth Clarke, Executive Director, FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE or Kim Banet, Programs Coordinator 312.899.1229 The Poetry Center receives Columbia College’s Paul Berger Arts Entrepreneurship Award and major grant renewal from Target Corporation Chicago, IL, April 30, 2003 – The Poetry Center of Chicago was chosen to receive Columbia College Chicago’s 2002-2003 Paul Berger Arts Entrepreneurship Award for outstanding service in the field of arts management, within the category NOT - FOR - PROFIT WITH A BUDGET UNDER $1,000,000. Columbia College specifically honors Kenneth Clarke, Executive Director of The Poetry Center, as having demonstrated “exceptional leadership, management, and entrepreneurial skills.” The Poetry Center also received a renewal of a $30,000 grant from Target Corporation, in support of the Hands on Stanzas poets-in-residence program in Chicago’s public schools. Hands on Stanzas places Chicago poets in residence at public schools throughout the city, with an emphasis on under-resourced communities. During 20-week residencies, students write, read, discuss and present poetry. The goals of Hands on Stanzas are to increase student literacy, enthusiasm and academic confidence, and to make poetry available to Chicago schools that have limited access to the arts. This year, Hands on Stanzas provided weekly poetry instruction to approximately 2,300 students, and made poetry available to more than 12,000 students through school-wide projects such as poetry magazines, clubs, galleries and performances. The Poetry Center’s 30 year-old Annual Reading Series presents nationally noted poets, as well as local and emerging poets, to Chicago audiences. In the last two years, The Poetry Center’s membership has increased one thousand percent.
