Content Inside: The Shakespeare for Children Theater Workshop is Back! Press Release for Wednesday, May 02, 2007 Young people who are exposed to the true venue of Shakespeare are likely to remember his magic. According to Peter Malcolm, formerly of Redlands, in a letter mailed to Katherine Thomerson who created and founded the program: "The Childrens Shakespeare Theater is where I first learned to love theater. The cool thing about Childrens Shakespeare is that its so much fun. Rehearsals were fun! Performances were a blast! I had a really good time doing those with you." Malcomb is a graduate of the Bard School in New York. The Redlands Shakespeare Festival has invited Thomerson ( who is on the board) to direct a summer Shakespeare for Children Camp. Thomerson is seeking 25 to 30 children. The children will rehearse for a production of Twelfth Night. There are no auditions. Sign-ups are scheduled for June 30th - 1:00 pm at the old City Hall. The fee is 350.00. The camp will begin July 9th and will go through August 8th. Performance dates are August 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th. Costumes are provided; children will be taught theater etiquette by professional actors and actresses. They will learn technique and the mechanicals of movement on a real set. Thomerson will direct and produce. This program teaches and motivates an interest in language and literature and prepares children for Shakespeare experience in high school. "Kids can do more than we expect them to." says Thomerson. "When you hear a ten year old shout, "Lay your venerable burden down," and that child knows the meaning.and begets churned laughter in its presentation.the experience unfolds emotion. This Shakespeare camp is based on Thomersons philosophy that children be exposed to literature at an early age.
