Looking back on the three days of cable programming presentations at the Winter Television Critics Association tour earlier this week the upcoming series that seems to have generated the most interest among the press is TLC's "What Not to Wear." This is a reality series in which an individual is selected by family and friends to receive a complete head to toe makeover by frequently bitchy celebri- ty fashion stylists. The press confer- ence for this show which included the stylists and their first fashion victim was both humorous and informative expertly positioning the show. Given the realities of reality television at the moment this series can't lose. Critics haven't stopped talking about it all week. Apparently TLC senses that "What Not to Wear" could be its next "Trading Spaces." (Like "Spaces" "Wear" is also based on a British series.) TLC pro- gramming vice president and acting general manager Roger Marmet said the network is running a preview of "Wear" on Saturday January 18 fol- lowing a special edition of "Trading Spaces." In March it will join TLC's potent Saturday prime time lineup a lineup so strong it sometimes gives broadcasters the sweats. Incidentally the final segment of the Jan. 18 edition of "Spaces" in which the neighbors who redecorate a room in each other's homes reveal the results to each other will air live. This stunt should draw one of the largest ratings ever for "Spaces" and serve as a potent lead-in to the "What Not to Wear" preview. In terms of self-promotion think of a live edition of "Trading Spaces" as TLC's own Super Bowl.
