Content Inside: DATE Friday 30th September Urban art versus graffiti Too road operator CityLink has joined forces with Yarra City Council’s Youth Arts Program to deliver a unique community art project. A giant mural designed entirely by young Yarra artists and overlooking the Yarra River is intended to enhance the local environment and reduce vandalism. Recognising that the incidence of ‘tagging’ is significantly reduced on outdoor walls featuring murals or artistic design, the mural represents a novel approach to tackling the graffiti issue. The project is intended to provide young artists with the opportunity to positively contribute to their local community, through an art form that struggles for mainstream recognition. At the same time, it’s hoped the recognised artwork will serve as a diversionary measure for vandals that often target the riverside site. ‘CityLink approached the City of Yarra’s Youth Arts Program because we wanted a whole of community approach to this issue,’ said CEO Brendan Bourke. ‘We could have just kept cleaning off, or painting over, the random graffiti that appears on this site every week, wasting time and money. ‘Or, we could work within the community, drawing on the resources and knowledge of council to gain a true understanding of the local culture, to create a project that harnesses local talent in a productive, constructive way,’ he said. City of Yarra Mayor Kay Meadows praised the project, which fits in with the council’s wider strategy of managing graffiti. ‘This is a real example of a positive community project where businesses, local councils, and young people have come together to achieve something we all value,’ Cr Meadows said. ‘It has also been a great educational experience for the artists involved who had to work to a brief, design the mural, source the paint and work with project managers within large corporations,’ she said. A similar project was also completed in Moonee Ponds earlier this year ...
