The public, the councillors and the unlucky fence-owners. And fair enough — the two-second tags that collage Gisborne city are an eyesore. These people that go out on “hit-up” sprees ruin the art side of graffiti. One of nZ’s top graffiti artists Elliot “Askew” O’Donnell, whose crew won the world Write4Gold battle in Germany last year, uses the can strictly for art. “I love art for expression, the can is the tool I am most comfortable using.” Expression — that’s what graffiti art is. The harder the bombs are to read, the more thought and planning has gone into them. A full-time student and part-time bomber who resides in Auckland, who we’ll call noodle, says “Auckland bombing differs from the graffiti that is spat out locally in Gissy, as most of it is just hit-ups, hit-ups that are done just for a rush — they don’t do it for art, that’s vandalism.” Contradicting noodle’s hit-up opinion is Askew’s word on the quick two-second-tag: “Tagging is a vital part of writing, it’s the skeleton or the backbone. Without a fresh tag you have no foundation as a true writer. Tags are like anything, there are people that suck at it and there are people that are fantastic at it. Sometimes a good tag is better than a big wall mural because of the spontaneity and flair. Doing it is the only way to get better. If you stick at anything for long enough you may become a king.” The stereotype that comes with the territory of hit-ups is usually that of “a pain in the arse”, or “bored kids who waste taxpayers’ money”.
